Enter comments about groomed conditions. : The temporary Little Truckee Summit snowmobile trailhead has been moved to Webber Lake (and the 12 road intersection), about 8 miles west of Little Truckee Summit on the Jackson Meadows (07) road. Snow and ice still cover the asphalt road surface in some areas, please drive slow (25 mph or less!) and use caution. Please do not park in the turnaround area, use only to unload/load snowmobiles. Parallel park on the south side of the Jackson Meadows road, east bound lane.

Approximately 1-2 feet of snow at Webber Lake, 2-3 feet of snow at Yuba Pass SnoPark. Spring conditions in the Tahoe National Forest over-snow environment: watch for running water, sink holes, down trees, and obstacles showing up at the snow surface.

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : Snowmobile trail grooming is finished for the 2009/2010 winter season. Future updates will involve the Little Truckee Summit temporary trailhead locations. The Little Truckee Summit trailhead has been moved to the Independence intersection, about 2 miles West of Little Truckee Summit on the 07 road. Please use the cleared area at the Independence intersection for unloading/loading snowmobiles only, and parallel park on the South side of the 07 road. Please avoid riding snowmobiles on any bare pavement spots along the main route. Prosser Hill trailhead has little remaining snow, but Yuba Pass SnoPark still has 3-5 feet of snow coverage!

Tonight we groomed from peddler down to bear via the dufrene crossing and the short cut trail. past the resort and acrossed the dam. up pardoes road to the spur 19 summertrack intersection and back. We cleared the avalance near the dam and widend all the old burmed corners. The snow can be a little ruff this time of year because we are moving some that has been packed all winter. There is still alot of snow left, we usually groom until the middle to end of may. Soon we'll have the only groomed trails in the state. The snow is great, get out and have fun. God bless, Frank.

Be careful on the m.e.t. We were cutting this area and had to leave without fixing the trail. It could be very rough. This might the end grooming for the season? To bad because there is as much snow now as there has been all year. Keep ridn, be safe and God bless.

Acrossed the dam and up pardoes road to intersection of coal creek loop and squaw ridge, then back. The trail is pretty rough, there was alot of moist heavey snow to deal with and it plugged the tiller constantly. We hope to head up the hill to iron thurs. We have lots of snow up there, so get up this weekend and ride. Be safe and God bless. Frank.

The week of March 22 will be our last week of running the snow cats over the snow. This week the trails groomed up like butter. The snow that is left is beautiful.

Swain, Morgan, Latour and Bogard are holding snow…but with 60 degree days things are changing quickly!

There are thin patches of snow with dirt showing on the Fredonyer and Ashpan systems.

The Lassen National Forest would like to take this opportunity, to thank all of our dedicated partners, volunteers, and employees during the 2010 snow grooming season. All your support and expertise is greatly appreciated.

It is always a pleasure working together with ALL of you on this program.
Thanks again!

52 miles groomed tonight, temps started warm @ 39 finished better @ 28. A-1 Thru A-12 , L-5. Worked 16 road to Grey back then out Red mountain loop,Dogsled/cutter, out to battle creek reservoir, up the Latour/Battle creek connector to L-5, back out to Greyback , down Greyback ridge to 16 road, out the Lower Ashpan Butte loop to the staging area. The lower 16 road seems to be weathering the warm temps fairly well, although it is rougher in areas than normal due to snow being moved to the sun baked areas Please slow down on the 16 for the first 4 miles (greyback turnoff) As always Ride Right, watch for others and enjoyyour ride!!! Thanks Wes

Replaced the groomer’s defroster motor on Wednesday morning. Temps were 25 degrees at Greenhorn Summit. Wednesday afternoon we groomed out to Portuguese Pass and opened up the drifts on the #67 Sugarloaf route and groomed down to Tyler Mdw. Snow was perfect for grooming and just fell off the blade. The high for the day was 35 degrees. Thursday we left Greenhorn Summit and went to Sugarloaf trailhead. Temps were in the 40’s. Snow had changed and progress was slow. Two snowmobiles had come out from Greenhorn Summit behind us. The snow had not set up and the snowmobile tracks were 3 to 4” deep. From Sugarloaf we groomed to Johnsondale via Tobias Peak. The routes can vary from a nice smooth ride to some rough conditions do to the various snow texture. There is a tree across the 51 route below Speas Ridge that I bridged over since it looked to be a least an hour to remove. We plan on being at Ponderosa on Tuesday evening. We experienced some steering problems and the mechanic from Kassbohrer checked out our hydraulic pump pressures on Friday afternoon. Everything checked out at the right pressures and our test ride didn’t show any problems.

There is 7 plus feet of snow in the Ponderosa area

Ponderosa and Quaking Aspen Trailheads (7200’) are clear and open. Toilets available.

Parking is available at the North Road. Portable toilets are located at Ponderosa Lodge Parking area.

Sugarloaf Trailhead (5800’) is plowed and portable toilets installed. Approx. 6-8” of snow.

Greenhorn Trailhead (6100’) is plowed and portable toilets installed. Approx. 6-12” of snow. Snowline is approximately at 5500’ on Hwy 155 west of Greenhorn Summit.

Parker Pass Drive is open to 4x4’s during daylight hours. A fully groomed surface starts just below Parker Pass 6200’.

Be cautious, keep your speed down and have a safe weekend.

Remember that in the Monument OSV‘s are only allowed on non maintained snow covered roads. Motorized cross country travel is prohibited in the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Eagle Lake Ranger District
Beautiful NEW snow. Our trails are in top condition. Storm after storm is adding moisture to our streams and lakes. The USFS sent out the survey results for Chester. As of March 1 we are 150% of average. Last year at this time we measured 59% on the same course. Chester/Swain system is beautiful. In places, we have 10 feet of snow. We are extending our grooming efforts through March 26. After that our groomer operators begin grading roads and preparing for the spring thaw.

Bogard Trails were groomed at the beginning of the week. It is unusual for us to have so much snow across the Pine Creek Valley. When spring hits, the dips fill with water. Be careful when flying across the flats as it is hard to see the topography when all is flat and white!

On the Fredonyer long loop the snow is getting thin. We are starting to hit dirt on Moonlight and at Willard Hill. Next week we will pull the intersection signs from this system. The short loop has plenty of snow and the Diamonds are providing beautiful riding. Take advantage of the spring conditions and spectacular vistas.

Skiers - play at Hog Flat. We are trying something different this week, grooming a loop along Hog Flat. Bring the kids, the dog and enjoy skiing the open spacious meadows. Parking is available at Goumaz to access this newly groomed loop.

Hat Creek Ranger District
Groomers at Ashpan are hard at work. Wes and George have done a super job keeping up with the storms and providing great riding opportunities at Ashpan. On the weekends the parking lots are full. Reports say that the lower portion of the 16 road is thinning out, only a foot left in places, with some of the highest elevation trails holding 15 + feet! We will continue to groom just as long as the snow, the temperatures and the interest allows.

Skiers - Butte Lake Road is groomed to the Lassen National Park Boundary.

Almanor Ranger District
A great snow year for the West slope trails. Our volunteer Larry Bird has been a positive addition to our grooming team. He is excited because all of you are out riding, enjoying his hard work and dedication to the program. The snow is thinning on the Mill Creek side of Highway 172. No pavement showing yet. We are going to keep this system open until the County plows Highway 172.

Skiers - McGowan Lake Ski Trails are in beautiful shape. Ski from Highway 89 to the Church Camp Road, down to Highway 36, this five-mile trail borders the southern edge of Lassen Volcanic National Park.

For more information on conditions and restrictions call the Almanor Ranger District (530) 258-2141, the Eagle Lake Ranger District (530) 257-4188 or the Hat Creek Ranger District (530) 336-5521.

At Greenhorn Summit we did not receive as much snow as Ponderosa on Saturday. There was no snow at all on the groomer on Tuesday morning. Wednesday the storm that was going to arrive at noon showed up around 5:00 pm. Thursday the snow line had dropped down to about 4,000’ but it wasn’t a deep snow since you could still see green trees at 6,000’.

This week we are still experiencing electrical problems. We bypassed the 12 volt converter and went directly to one of the batteries for power to the Forest Service two way radio. The defroster fan started making noise and then started blowing fuses. Turns out the motor seized up and another unit was ordered from Kassbohrer in Reno. When it arrives we will install it and start grooming again. Barring any breakdowns we should finish off the south end next week and hopefully be in Johnsondale by Thurs.

There is 7 plus feet of snow in the Ponderosa area

Ponderosa and Quaking Aspen Trailheads (7200’) are clear and open. Toilets available.

Parker Pass Drive is open to 4x4’s during daylight hours. A fully groomed surface starts just below Parker Pass 6200’.

Be cautious, keep your speed down and have a safe weekend.

We were on the snow about 13 hours to groom this section. weve done this in 7 hours before, thats how much snow we had to move. tons of snow every where. Wet heavey snow covered by very light dry unpackable snow. Conditions were tough to groom but will be great to ride. As always don't ride alone you'll probably get stuck off trail. Back to the Latour F/S out the Cow creek cutter road to 16 to the staging area. With the extremely cold temps the snow is incredibly powdery, more so than I have seen in a few years!! George will be doing Battle Creek and the Lower Ashpan system tomorrow and I will continue working latour thru the weekend (Thurs,Fri Sat, Sun) Frank Deaver from Iron Mountain snowpark will be over for the weekend to give the PB400 a try so we will be getting a lot of miles done this weekend!!!! As always Ride RIGHT, watch for hazards and other riders as they may both appear without warning and most of all enjoy the POWDER!!!!

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 02/02/10 Tues. Lots of snow, big drifts and white out. Tonight we groomed , infact one our rookies did most of it. Great job james! from peddler, fostermeadow road, leaks springs tower, leaks springs meadow road, M.E.t. due to huge drifts most our time was spent here. snowpark, out to windy hollow and about 500 yards beyond. Two feet of new snow since last week. We did a five feet deep fourty feet wide and 1/4 to 1/2 mile long cut to remove drifts on the m.e.t. Have fun, be safe and God bless, Frank.

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 3-2-10.. 52 miles groomed tonight under snowy conditions and much better temps 28-30 degrees. 16 road to jacks backbone, out Huckelberry road via Flattop then out the butcher Gulch road to the Sunset/Sandow loop back to the Huckelberry road below Latour F/S via the Tucker road. (This new loop adds approx 15 miles to the Latour System. It had not been done in many years. Tomorrow pm I will also get the Pipeline loop opened adding another 10 miles . Both these roads have been cut and tilled but may be rough in some areas as a lot of fill was needed in many areas, the more we work these roads the better they will get.) back out the Huckelberry road to the Cow Creek Cutter road to 16 road and back to the staging area. New snow accumulations of 2-8” since early this afternoon with more on the way. I Will be grooming thru the rest of the week and into the weekend so come and enjoy the snow while it lasts.. George will be working Battle Creek and the lower Ashpan system possibly tomorrow and Thursday we hope t have the entire system done by Friday/Saturday. As always ride RIGHT, Watch for others, watch for hazards and be kind to the snowpack on the lower 16 road!!!! Thanks Wes

Spring weather always changes quickly, one week warm and sunny, the next, its cold and snowing. Make safety your number one priority. Travel with a friend. Make sure that you tell someone where you are going. Carry emergency equipment. Be safe and have fun!

Eagle Lake Ranger District
Fredonyer Trail System - The snow is plentiful. On Tuesday, February 23 we groomed the short loop; Thursday the long loop. The national weather service is predicting a storm this Friday and Saturday. If their prediction holds true, riders will have easy access to the slopes of the Diamond Mountains.

Swain Trail System holds the most snow thus is receiving lots of use.

Bogard Trail system is a rich area to ride. Fun hill climbs, great snow and beautiful views. These trails have been lightly traveled this year. If you are looking for an uncongested place to ride, visit the Bogard area.

Skiers - On Friday we will be grooming the Butte Lake Trail for Cross-Country Skiers.

Snowshoers - On Saturday, February 27 join the Eagle Lake Ranger District on their moonlight snowshoe hike. Call the district office to sign up for this fun hike under the moonlight.

Hat Creek Ranger District
The snow continues to fall on the west slope of the Cascades. The temperatures are perfect for grooming the trails. The Latour system had 14 to 16 inches of new snow, with 50 glorious miles of freshly groomed trails to ride. This weekend is the full moon. Remember that our snow groomers work nightly on the Ashpan and Latour systems. Please be a cautious rider and watch out for your safety first. Think Snow!

Almanor Ranger District
Skiers - Come ski the McGowan Lake Trails. The trail is groomed from the trailhead on Highway 89, the hill climb to the cinder pit and down the Church Camp Road to Highway 36.

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 2-24-10 Snowing heavily again tonight, but temps were at the 30 -32 degree area so the snow had considerable moisture in it. The staging area had received 2-3’ of fresh since last night the upper Latour system a storm total of 14-16”. 50 miles groomed tonight A-1 thru A-5, L-1 thru L-5, 16 road to Jacksbackbone, out Huckelberry loop to the latour F/S , down flat top to L-2, out the Rim road to L-4, then out the middle road to L-3, procedded out to L-5 (banded trees) down the latour/battle creek connector, back up and out huckleberry road to the F/S down the Cow creek Cutter road to 16 to the staging area. The snow tilled and finished nicely but blade work was kept to a minimum due to the moisture content of the fresh snow. I was again unable to open any new areas in latour due to very poor visibility and warmer temps, I will continue to try and get these areas open depending on what the next set of storms bring. As always Ride right, watch for hazards and enjoy the ride!! Thanks Wes

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 2-23-10 Am/Pm report. George logged 44 miles today under snowy conditions, 16 road to Red mtn. Loop out to battle Creek Resevoir, back out to grey back, down Greyback ridge to 16 road out to the lower Ashpan Butte loop, then to Dogsled and to the staging area, A-1 thru A-13 temps stayed in the upper 20’s to 30 degrees .
2-23 Pm 50 miles groomed tonight for a total of 94 miles for the day!!! Blizzard conditions and near zero visibility kept me from opening any new roads in the Latour area tonight, 4-6” had fallen at the staging area today with 10-12” in the upper system. 16 road to Jacksbackbone, back out 16 road to bear Wallow, out to Bear wallow Butte turnoff , back to 16 road. I worked the lower 16 road from the staging area to greyback several times moving snow to the sun baked areas and packing and tilling the fresh snow adding approx 6” of pack to this area. It snowed heavily all night and was snowing when I left down to 3500 feet. George will again be out in the am doing the few roads left to be done in the Ashpan/Battlecreek area and I will attempt to get out and do latour tomorrow Pm. The trees are starting to snow load again and may create hazards near the trail edges please be cautious. As always ride right watch for hazards and enjoy your ride Thanks Wes

It was snowing like crazy, about a foot while we were out. Very dry lite snow. It was also very windy, so i'm sure there will be many drifts already. A-1 thru A-5, L-1 thru L-5 , 16 road to Jacksbackbone, out the Huckelberry road to Flattop Creek Cutter Road to 16 road to the staging area. The Rim road and middle road L-2 thru L-4 are in excellent shape as I was able to cut most of the roughness created by 10-15’ of fill out due to the very cold temps, there are still a few rough areas due to sinking fill so please be cautious when traveling these roads. 2-23 am George will be doing Battle creek/greyback and the lower roads, 2-23 pm I will be out to do the Cow Creek Cutter road extention to the New Peavine road then continueing to open the Gulch Road behind Latour F/S. Another storm is predicted to hit tomorrow afternoon and into Wednesday. Riding is excellent with Ashpan 100% open with 45-50 miles groomed and Latour is 95% open with 45 miles groomed and more being done this week. There is 4 plus feet of snow in the Ponderosa Area.

Approx. 6” of snow.

Greenhorn Trailhead (6100’) is plowed and portable toilets installed. Approx. 6” of snow. Dirt is starting to show in the timber at the Trailhead. Snowline is approximately at 5500’ on Hwy 155 west of Greenhorn Summit.

** The snow is melting fast. Temps are around 67 degrees during the day. Haven’t been into Sugarloaf Trailhead since last Thursday and I’m not sure what the #67 route is like but it may have bare spots on it since most of it is south facing slopes. #51 route from Greenhorn Summit has about 8 patches of dirt and the snow and is too thin to groom for the first 4 miles. At present we are just tilling as we pass over since any blade work would put us in the dirt.

While servicing the groomer last week we discovered a track bolt that was bent. On Wed 2/17 we cut the bolt out and replaced it. We also caulked the moon roof since it was leaking.

On 2/18, the groomer lost 12 volt power and until I can go back and track down the problem we are grounded since the 12 volt powers the fuel transfer switch.

Last weekend the OSV patrol found 2 Ponderosa locals traveling cross country on illegal trails on the Monument. Warnings were issued no cites.

There is 4 plus feet of snow in the Ponderosa Area.

Groomer hit pavement coming into trailhead.

Greenhorn Trailhead (6100’) is plowed and portable toilets installed. Approx. 12” of snow. Dirt starting to show in the timber at the Trailhead. Snowline is approximately at 5500’ on Hwy 155 west of Greenhorn Summit.

We opened the gate and built a snow mound on the route leaving Greenhorn Trailhead. The next day while servicing the groomer a local suggested we close the gate since local 4x4’s would attempt to cross the mound. Mound was removed and gate relocked.

Parker Pass Drive is open to 4x4’s during daylight hours. A fully groomed surface starts at Cold Springs Saddle.

Be cautious, keep your speed down and have a safe weekend.

Remember that in the Monument OSV‘s are only allowed on non maintained snow covered roads. Motorized cross country travel is prohibited in the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Upcoming Events:

Snow Fest, Feb. 27, 2010, Quaking Aspen Trailhead

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 02/16/10 tues. Tonight we groomed foster meadow road, leaks spring tower, leaks spring meadow road, m.e.t. from the meadow to the snopark, snopark to windy hollow and acrossed a few hundred yards. We lost the bearings in a bogie wheel so we had to limp back. Due to the bogie wheel and warm temps. we probably won't groom again until after the next storm. Lots of great snow so get out and have fun! Be safe and watch for hazards. God bless Frank.

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 2-16-10.. 40 miles groomed tonight, temps again started in the mid to upper 30’S but finished the night in the 20’s. 16 road to Red Mountain loop, out to Battle Creek Res. Onto and up the Latour/battle creek connector, out the huckleberry road , past the F/S, down the Cow Creek Cutter road out to 16 and to the stageing area. Trails held up very well during the warm day today, and with the cold temps tonight I think the lower 16 road will survive this warm stretch fairly well. The upper system is holding 8-10’ of snow the lower is holding 1-4’.Ashpan is 100% open with approx 45-50 miles groomed, Latour is near 100% open with 45 miles groomed. I did not attempt to further open the Tucker road tonight due to the temps being a little to warm, hopefully if these next storms are snow makers I will be able to finish all four of these roads(Tucker,Sunset,Pipeline,Gulch) adding another 15-20 miles to the latour system.. The Pipeline,Sunset and Tucker( were previously opened by the Late Charlie Olmstead) in marginal snow years will lose snow early. These roads have a lot of back country riding opportunities and will be a nice area to have again. As always ride right, ride safe watch for others and hazards as they both may appear without warning!!! Thanks Wes

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 2-15-10 45 miles groomed tonight, temps started a little on the warm side 36 degrees but finished the night at 28 degrees, so the trails groomed and will set up nicely tonight. A-1 thru A-5, L-1 to L-2, and I was able to get approx 2 miles of the Tucker road opened tonight, this road is below Latour F/s and goes around mcMillian Mtn, I will try and continue to get this and one other road opened by the weekend.

16 road to Ashpan butte lower loop, out 16 road to jacksbackbone, to Latour F/S via the Cow creek cutter road thru the cutter road to Peavine road, out the Huckelberry loop to the Tucker road, back the Huckelberry road to Old Cow Creek campground via flattop, 16 road to staging area. Snow is holding up well even with the warm temps, please be aware the lower 16 road(approx 3 miles) is showing the stress of heavy use and warm temps, the better care we take of this area the longer it will hold snow, so please no burn outs or heavy turning on this part of the road. Thanks . As always ride right, watch for other riders, and hazards do and will occur at anytime, especially near the edges and under the trees. Ride safe and enjoy the snow!! Thanks Wes

You are invited to experience a winter wonderland. We have snow, tons of snow. It has been a fun year for grooming snow, hosting snowshoe walks and proving quality recreation for you. Be prepared: bring your sunscreen, cell phone, first aid kit, high energy food, water and extra clothing. Be sure to dress in layers, wear sunglasses, snowboots, hat and gloves. Keep cotton fabric away from your body, this keeps the chill off your skin. Polypropylene or wool works best.

Your intersection signs are in place on the Morgan, Swain, Bogard and Fredonyer Trail Systems. Please, if you are out riding and notice a sign leaning over, help us maintain our trails by straightening these intersection markers. We appreciate your efforts.

Eagle Lake Ranger District
Get your snowmobile riding in this weekend, on Lassen National Forest. The Fredonyer, Bogard and Swain trails groomed up beautifully, leaving the snow like a corduroy blanket and the trails creamy and dreamy. The weekend forecast is for sunshine in the mountains.

The Chester/Swain system is in great shape for the Chester Lake Almanor Poker Run. Local riders have told us that these are the best riding conditions they have experienced in years. Get your snowmobile riding in this weekend, on Lassen National Forest

Hat Creek Ranger District
Our volunteers have been working hard clearing the perimeter trails on the Ashpan and Latour System. The Butte Creek connector and the rim road to the New Cow Creek campground both are now free of windfall. Try riding both trails this weekend. These trails are a little rough in spots, keep your speed down and proceed with extreme caution.

Skiers- the Lassen National Forest encourages you to come out and play on a groomed cross-country ski trail towards Butte Lake. To access this trail take Highway 44 North from Susanville and South from Old Station. There you will find 4.5 miles of ski trails groomed with a Ginzu groomer, the same groomer that is used in the winter Olympics to groom the trails used for competition.

Almanor Ranger District
Please join the Chester Lake Almanor Chamber of Commerce in celebrating the “Winter Carnival” in Chester. On Saturday February 20th and Sunday, February 21st, they are hosting dog sled races. The races begin at 8:30, at the Cedar Chalet Bakery. A fun treat for the entire family.

Tonight we groomed, peddler down to the dufrene crossing, dufrene road, sugar pine loop, past the resort, acrossed the dam, up pardoes road to four corners, squaw ridge to the warming hut and the meadow below. We did a training pass for a new operator on the cole creek loop, it turned out pretty good for one of his first cuts. There is a very good snow base and it was lightly snowing while we were out. As always watch for hazards and come by the warming shed on squaw ridge saturday. The club is hosting a get together, should be lots of riders. Have fun, God bless Frank.

Light snow falling off and on tonight with possibly 1-3” by morning. The Rim road opened last night is in pretty good shape but will need a pass or two to get it up to my standards watch for low spots in heavy fill areas as these were still soft tonight due to the amount of fill needed to make them near level last night, the same applies to the middle road opened tonight, areas may be rougher than normal till I can make one or two more passes. I may try and open the rest of the Cow Creek Cutter road to above (NE) of the fire station tomorrow pm depending on the temps. Thanks Bob Wagner for the company tonight. As always ride safe, ride Right and watch for hazards as they may occur without warning even on groomed routes and as always enjoy the ride!! Thanks Wes

From the Connector down Grayback to 16 road , back up gray back to the upper road to A-3, back Red mtn loop to staging area.. 1-3” of fresh snow this am for George with temps in the 20’s so the trails groomed out excellent!!!!
2-9-10 pm , temps in the low 20’s and 6’ of fresh in the upper system, snow worked and groomed out very nice. 16 road to latour F/S via the lower Huckelberry loop to Flat top and then out The Rim road,, the rim road is open and groomed from L-2 to L-4, it took 2 hours to cut in a 2 mile road, 15-20’ deep holes and 50 degree sidehills, it may have a few rough spots as I was not able to get enough fill in 2 passes to level some of the deep holes out, drifting and blow outs around the trees was the worst I have encountered to date!!! I removed 6-8 windfall and was able to get to L-4 , I will get out to connect L-4 with L3 (middle cow creek road) tomorrow pm and possibly if time permits the Cow creek cutter road to the East of Latour F/S time permitting as both of these areas will be extreme!! 40 miles groomed tonight, awesome snow and great conditions. As always ride safe, be cautious on newely opened roads as hazards may reoccur and watch for others as it will be a busy late week and weekend!! Thanks Wes

The trails are in excellent shape. Snow groomed up glorious this week. The snow cats are purring, thanks to the dedicated work from the State and Kassbohrer over the weekend. We sure appreciate them taking away from their weekend to work on two broken down snow cats.

Next weekend mark your calendar!!! On Saturday, February 13, is the Chester Lake Almanor Snowmobile Poker Run. Registration is at 8:30 am at the Chester Snowpark. Families are encouraged. For more information call 530-284-7969 or (530) 596-4354. This is always a fun spirited event.

Hat Creek Ranger District
Early to rise, early to groom. Temperatures in the low 20’s, the snow was light and fluffy. Eighty miles of trails are groomed, the lower Ashpan loop road to Greyback, out to Latour/Battle Creek, the 16 road to Jackbone, and out the Huckleberry loop to the fire station. Due to windfall, two outer loops on Latour system and the Rim Trail have not been groomed this season. Be cautious. The intersection below the Latour Fire Station is rough due to wet snow covering the trails.

Wes Dailey, our volunteer groomer operator at Ashpan and Latour, was selected as the “Groomer of the Year” for 2009 by the California Nevada Snowmobile Association. The Hat Creek Ranger District sure appreciates his dedication to this winter recreation program.

Almanor Ranger District
Trees, trees and more wind-thrown trees. We worked on the Tamarack trail this week. Broke another hydraulic hose. We were able to make it a mile short of the turnoff to Turner Mountain. We swiped a hose from another cat. The cat should be up and running for the weekend. Tamarack Loop, Morgan Summit to Pear Lake Loop and Mineral Summit are our projected targets. The trails should be smooth and fun to ride!

Snowmobile opportunities on the Lassen are made possible through a partnership between the Forest Service, California, Off-highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division, and many dedicated volunteers. Be sure that your snowmobile has a current registration and a “green sticker” on the machine. The funds from your green sticker, provide for staging areas, rest-rooms, warming huts, and grooming trails.

Skiers, when you hear snowmobiles approaching, please keep to the right of the trails. These trails are windy and contain blind corners. We want every trail user to have a safe experience.

Enter comments about groomed conditions. : 2-2(am) George was out early this morning temps were in the low 20’s, snow was light and fluffly and groomed out nicely. A-1 Thru A-10 , Lower Ashpan loop road to Greyback, out to Battle Creek and to the bottom of the Latour/Battlecreek connector, back out to Red Mountain loop and to the staging area 40 miles groomed. Approximately 1” of fresh overnight.

2-2 (pm) Joel and I headed back out at approx 5:30 to warmer temps (30) and off and on heavy snow. A-1 Thru A-7..L-1 thru L-2 , 42 miles groomed tonight. 16 road to Jacksbackbone, out Huckelberry loop to the fire station via the lower Huckelberry road bypassing Flattop, their was windfall on this lower road I wanted to get removed which we did and continued to the latour F/S and out the Cow Creek Cutter road back out 16 to the staging area. 80 miles groomed today!!!! Approx 10” of new snow had fallen in the upper system since last night but with the warmer temps the snow didn’t work quite as well as in the past couple of nights. Beaware the trails under the larger trees are rough as they had shed a lot of their snow load since last night making rock hard areas under the trees , also the intersection @ the Huckelberry/rim road below the latour F/S is rougher than normal due to some wetter snow in this area, I will get it cleaned up tomorrow PM. Ow is on the way sounds like a couple more feet so come and enjoy the most snow we have had in many years. As always ride safe, watch for others and for obstacles as they may and can occur without warning!!!! Thanks Wes

for some reason the SPOT did not track tonight but has Georges route tracked from today.
