Report on CNSA Convention March 3-4, 2017                     March 8, 2017

Tahoe Biltmore, Crystal Bay, Nevada

By Greg McKay , President Tahoe Sierra Snowmobiling Club

Central CNSA Representative

Greetings Fellow CNSA Members:

It was great to see and ride with fellow CNSA snowmobilers. As you know we (like you) are experiencing an epic snowfall this year. At present we are hovering around 250% of average snowfall and close to that of moisture.

We rode out of Hope Valley on Thursday (13 riders), Little Truckee Summit on Friday (19 riders), and Spooner Summit on Saturday (23 riders). Snow conditions were exceptional, daily search activities were minimal and nobody got hurt.

We had a snowstorm Saturday night into Sunday which dumped another 18-36 inches in the Tahoe Basin along with some significant wind. Several CNSA members cancelled as to not deal with the weather but those that stayed had a great time.

In our CNSA meetings much discussion was centered on the five National Forests that are going thru the over the snow travel plans. Much concern focused on the Plumas, Tahoe, Stanislaus, and the Tahoe Basin. Our dinner was great with Prime Rib and Salmon and our auctions were well received.

In the Tahoe Basin we are due to have the proposed alternatives out in May, with more public comment after that. The feedback I’ve gotten from the USFS was little change, with the Hell Hole Reservoir having the yellow legged frog and some concern there. Hopefully this is a by-product of the consensus-building work we’ve done in the last few years. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the Forests.

We also have a new snowmobiling club from Elko, NV. They are just getting their by-laws and 501c3 stuff done. They got about 25 solid members and five times that following on facebook. We look forward to them as CNSA members in the near future.

We also have been active along with Fred Wiley and gotten funding to do road improvements over on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe. We did five miles this last summer with 12 miles scheduled for the 2017 summer. In 2018 we are putting in a 67 place parking lot and bathrooms on the Kingsbury Grade side. The USFS has been a great partner and is kicking in $350,000 for that project after building a new motorized trail last year.

Again I thank everyone who came up and had some good riding. Looking forward to the North Region convention next year.

Comments :    Dropped by Hope today and there was wet snow and enough to
launch at the staging area..  A few people were out and the concession was
up and running.  there is  snow on the road but the concession buss is
going past the gate with customers to a staging area...unknown to me
IF the temps drop there should be lots of snow tomorrow to ride on.  Its
5:30 pm and 41 degrees and raining here in Carson City at the moment..

Comments : We had our HIllsliders meeting last night and decided to cancel our February 7th poker run due to a lack of snow. Please post this on the website to get the word out. The club decided to not do a makeup date so we can concentrate on setting up for the state convention in Chico.

Comments : Re: Hand signals
For the decades I have Jeeped/snowmobiled I have heard about a 50/50 split on the proper hand signal (not single digit) to use to advise oncoming vehicles/snowmobiles as to how many machines are in the opposite group. Half say that the lead vehicle holds up fingers for the number of vehicles total. The other 50% say that you hold up the number of vehicles behind you. Is there a consensus?
